Tl;dr: when you pay someone to do something for you, called “outsourcing”, you not only lose money but prevents learning something new. <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n

Do you have a gym coach?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Did you buy that Mac Book because everyone has one?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Do you anxiously watch the weather report?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Do you turn on the radio to listen to the news?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Do you repeat what you\u2019ve heard on TV?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Do you book your holidays through a travel agency?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Do you go to the garage when your car breaks down?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Do you only undertake activities that have already been undertaken by one of your friends and are therefore considered \u201csafe\u201d?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Did you subscribe to a home delivery service?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Do you follow your governments\u2019 dietary guidelines?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Do you call the plumber once your pipe starts leaking?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Are you investing in a \u201csafe\u201d mutual fund managed by a bank?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Do you count on the government for your pension?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Do you listen to the \u201cmost listened\u201d songs on Spotify?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Do you ask the salesperson for advice prior to buying a car, a phone, a computer, etc?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Do you go to the cinema because \u201ceveryone has seen that movie\u201d?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Do you follow your doctor\u2019s advice to eat a high-carb low-fat diet?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Did you believe that the Netherlands would be flooded by 2015 like it was reported in that documentary?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Did you send your kids to school without doing a background check on teachers, the program, and the level of violence, hence entrusting your kids’ future to the government?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Did you ever read a book about how to educate kids prior to having them?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Did you get kids because your friends got kids?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Do you buy prepared dishes at the supermarket?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Do you believe in the religion you were raised in?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Do you choose your holidays based on Lonely Planet recommendations?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Do you read the books appearing in the FT top 20 books of the year?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Do you ever check what you\u2019re being told, even if it comes from \u201cexperts\u201d?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Do you ever pay someone to do something you could do yourself, including\u2026thinking?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Are you vegan<\/a> because you read in the magazine that meat gave cancer? <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Outsourcing Will Ruin Your Life<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Outsourcing your life comes down to getting people to do stuff for you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Whether it is fixing the washing machine, babysitting, or getting advice on what types of mortgage to contract, outsourcing has few advantages and many inconvenient.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To fully grasp the dimension of life outsourcing, we need to distinguish the two different types that exist, one being more subtle than the other: material outsourcing<\/strong> and mental outsourcing<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let\u2019s first speak about material outsourcing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Material Outsourcing<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Material outsourcing is paying someone to do something for you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When you go to the restaurant, you outsource your cooking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When you go to the butchery, you outsource the hunting and cutting of your meat, not the cooking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Generally speaking, easy activities you could do yourself are safe to outsource.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Should all restaurants in your city be closed, I assume you won\u2019t die of hunger because you\u2019ll still be able to cook pasta bought at the supermarket.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As such, you don\u2019t depend on restaurants, they are nice to have, but not mandatory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These types of activities are therefore safe to outsource as you won\u2019t get completely screwed if your handler suddenly increases prices or refuses to outsource for you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Similarly, there are activities you shouldn\u2019t outsource to avoid being powerless. If you do outsource them, you should at least develop minimum skills to understand what your handler is doing. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Changing the battery of your car, for example, is not something you should outsource because you should understand how your car works.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you go to Iceland, you might drive hours without seeing a single soul, and without any mobile phone network coverage, there won\u2019t be anyone to change the battery for you, should it break down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You\u2019ll be your savior, so you better know how to save yourself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I believe as well that you should never outsource completely your own health (letting doctors decide for you) for two reasons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Firstly, doctors don\u2019t learn what they should at university.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr. Ken Berry wrote the book “Lies My Doctor Told Me” about contested health facts most doctors learn at university. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Secondly, doctors often specialize in one area of medicine. When one specializes, one tends to ignore the bigger picture that is however usually more important than just one part of the system, as explained by Vikram Mansharamani<\/a> in his brilliant book \u201cThink for yourself<\/a>\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Similarly, you shouldn\u2019t outsource the payment of your liabilities because the person that does so might<\/s> will steal from you (I tend to be rather pessimistic when it comes to human nature).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To simplify, you shouldn\u2019t outsource an activity if the outsourced activity is so complex that you become entirely dependent on your handler and you shouldn\u2019t outsource if the activity can be dealt with without outsourcing.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I personally believe that one should outsource as little as possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Indeed, doing it yourself has some advantages:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. You remain in control. A very important criterion to me because I don\u2019t trust other people nor do I like depending on others as it robs me of my power of initiative and takes my freedom away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What if my handlers suddenly stop to do things for me, or just die, or both?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Relying on someone is the opposite of being free. This is why I have never consumed addictive substances. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhat if I\u2019m in the middle of the jungle and I need the product I\u2019m addicted to and I don\u2019t have it, what would I do then?\u201d, I thought as a kid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I merely saw addictive substances as taking my freedom away, needlessly attaching me to something while all I was fighting for was absolute freedom and self-reliance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Drinking\/taking drugs\/smoking or not was a no brainer for me (except for weed, which I quickly regretted).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I wanted to remain in control no matter what. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. You learn a skill you could help others with and potentially monetize. For example, my friend asked me about real estate because I\u2019m good at analyzing the value of opportunities when it comes to housing valuation and economic conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I didn\u2019t charge him of course, but this is something I might be interested to develop in the future. It’s also a skill I won’t have to pay anyone for. If a dishonest real estate agent tries to scam me, I\u2019ll know it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another example is Amazon. Amazon fell into the cloud computing business out of luck.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They built their cloud for themselves and subsequently realized they could help other companies with theirs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

eBay was also built solely for his founder, Pierre Omidyar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Finally, Slack, a gaming company, realized they could instead of selling games, sell the messaging app they had built for themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. You save money because outsourcing costs! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes, it costs a lot when the task is difficult, such as building an app, or a yacht.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes, it doesn\u2019t cost so much, such as babysitting. Yet, the result is always the same: you pay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you add on top of that the fact that you also don\u2019t have control over the outsourced activity and don\u2019t give yourself the chance to learn it, you realize how big the opportunity cost is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ironically, I have noticed that it\u2019s the people that tend to have a lot of money that outsource the most and as a result, they can\u2019t do anything. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I\u2019ll give you an example of a friend I met during my studies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This dude had parents that were so rich that whatever problem he\u2019d encounter, he\u2019d pay someone to fix it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As a result, he could not do anything because money was the solution to all his problems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Literally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He had enough money to take Uber wherever he had to go and could not (in the sense of wasn\u2019t able to<\/em>) take public transportation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He had enough money to order takeaway and could therefore not cook.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He had enough money to pay the plumber and could therefore not fix sh*t himself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As a result, he wasn\u2019t only dependent on money, he was also dependent on the person he was paying to outsource his life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Should he find himself without money, or without anyone ready to help him, he\u2019d be factually powerless over his own life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the other side of the spectrum, my cousin, a successful entrepreneur, does everything by himself: from marketing to HR, from business operation to administrative work, from coding his website to fixing the coffee machine, he did<\/s> learned to do everything by himself and is now a resourceful entrepreneur able to help about anyone with anything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mental Outsourcing<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The second type of outsourcing is mental outsourcing. It is more subtle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While material outsourcing is most of the time effectuated in exchange for money, mental outsourcing is the opposite: \u201cagents\u201d (understand: companies, the government, and malevolent people) seek to outsource your decision-making for \u201cfree\u201d by telling you what to do: \u201cclick the link below\u201d; \u201cbuy my product\u201d; \u201csign up now for this free book\u201d; \u201csubscribe to our waste-of-time newsletter\u201d; \u201ccome spend your money in my empty restaurant\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mental outsourcing is basically \u201cdecision-making\u201d outsourcing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is asking others what to do<\/s> being told what to do even if you didn\u2019t solicit advice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When you mentally outsource your life, you\u2019re giving your decision-making power away to someone (or something) else.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For example, Google maps. When you follow maps, you\u2019re not deciding to take this route. You let the Google algorithm decide for you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another example is advertisements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Marketers are happy to tell you what to do<\/s> buy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Similarly, the government is happy to explain to you how to pay your taxes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These three advice highlight how we are being told what to do constantly. Furthermore, all of these pieces of advice are free because they enable the advice giver to reap rewards later. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

All website are always happy to explain to you how to buy from them\u2026for free!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now, not all mental outsourcing activities are done freely of course. Outsourcing your way out of paying taxes legally will be rather expensive<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Advice on getting a divorce will also be expensive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And a personality test to know what to study at university will most likely not be free either.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Free mental outsourcing types are the ones you want to beware of as it usually leads you to spend money in the end.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An ad is an advice on which products the buy, leading to the benefit of the adviser. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Beware of free mental outsourcing. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, mental outsourcing that fixes a problem you have<\/strong> is in a way very much like material outsourcing: it is paying someone to think for you in a matter that concerns you directly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Consultancy jobs, for example, or advisory jobs, are just that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Resist the Pressure<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Constantly throughout the day, we are being told what to think and what to do, up to a point where the choices we have left are very little compared to what we could have had without the constant interruption of all of these \u201cvoices\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The social sphere plays a huge role as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From neighbors competing for the biggest car to friends competing for the latest iPhone, your environment coerces you into making decisions you wouldn\u2019t have made otherwise.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let\u2019s not even speak of courtship practices, where guys learn skills they don\u2019t like to please girls or go about to entirely change their personality to have more success.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This results in us taking decisions we wouldn\u2019t take otherwise, letting \u201cothers\u201d and external influences being in charge of our lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a way, that\u2019s what I tried to show in the article about Jean-Michel<\/a>, an imaginary character reflecting the average Belgian.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Everything Jean-Michel does in his day came from someone else who has told him to do it. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For example, society wants you to spend all your money<\/a> so that the economy works. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Society wants you to start working and slave your life away as soon as possible. This is not in your best interest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Society wants you to watch reality TV and live in your happy consumer bubble while taxes increase and democracy decreases. This is not in your best interest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I won\u2019t even get into mainstream dietary guidelines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How to Think for Yourself<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The only thing you can do against outsourcing is doing the work yourself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stop trusting. Stop believing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Be willing and open-minded enough to learn and do your own research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I became a carnivore after one year of dietary research and would today feel confident to claim that the carnivore diet is a healthy diet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, should I one day notice that I don\u2019t function as well as I should, I won\u2019t hesitate to investigate and be willing to change my diet if empirical results come to darken the diet\u2019s reputation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Being open-minded is about changing your mind about issues as new information comes. It’s hard because humans don’t like chance. This is why not many people do it. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Don\u2019t be dogmatic and adjust according to results, not according to preconceived ideas, fake dogmas, and useless ideologies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Bottom Line<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Stop listening to the news, read them instead, and read them from different newspapers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Watch documentaries, but check out who finances them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Read books, a lot of books, about different topics, and ask yourself the question: \u201cdoes this make sense? Do I agree with that? Is it believable?\u201d and then, do your own research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Beware of social media and the \u201cfilter bubble\u201d, it confirms a vision of the world you already have.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Taking back control of your own life is expensive, but it is worth it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is your life and you should live it for yourself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not for others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
